Passkeys vs Passwords: What Actually Replaces What

Quick take
Passkeys use public-key credentials on a device or a manager. They resist many phishing sites that steal typed passwords. They do not make every site ready, and they still need a recovery story. Bitwarden currently stores passkeys in the vault as they document it. 1Password does too. This pairing is the idea, not a trophy.
It is not a shorter password
A password is a shared secret you type into a box an attacker can copy. A passkey is closer to a device proving it holds a private key. The phishing site can still say 'log in' — it cannot as easily catch the secret you typed.
Coverage is patchy. You will still have passwords for a decade of junk sites. That is why the vault remains the house.
From the record
Passkeys shrink the typed-secret problem. They do not shrink the recovery-kit problem.

Failure modes
One device, no backup, a broken phone. A site that falls back to email OTP — now you are in SIM-swap land. Shared household logins still need a vault share, not a passkey screenshot.

Vault
The house
- Prefer a manager that syncs passkeys if you have two devices.
- Keep unique passwords for sites that never heard of passkeys.
- Do not store the only recovery in the email the passkey protects.
- 1Password vs Bitwarden is polish vs price — both are doing passkeys.
Bitwarden as the house in this pairing
Bitwarden currently supports passkeys in the vault on a generous free individual plan as they document it. That is why it is the featured example: you still need a house for the leftover passwords. 1Password is the polish alternative on this site.
Confirm live passkey support on your OS. Implementations move.
Pros
- +Less typing into fake boxes
- +A vault can hold both worlds
- +Bitwarden's free tier still exists to start
Cons
- −Site support is uneven
- −One-device passkeys are a trap
- −Email fallback reopens SMS problems
Replace what you can. Vault the rest.
Turn on passkeys where the site is real. Keep Bitwarden (or 1Password) for everything else. GUIDEORA is not FIDO.
Editor take
A smaller typed-secret problem
Passkeys resist a lot of phishing. A vault is still the house. Bitwarden is the example this pairing uses. Confirm live. Keep a recovery kit.
