The 48 Hours After a Breach Email Are for Boring Work

Quick take

Breach notices mean a company lost a copy. Change unique passwords, freeze if SSN was in scope, watch bank logins. Aura is a household-monitoring example some people add after — it does not recall the dump. IdentityTheft.gov if you see new accounts. GUIDEORA is not a CRA.

You cannot un-lose their database

The email is a legal artifact. Your job is the accounts that reused that password and the SSN that cannot rotate. Buying twelve upsells is how panic shops.

If the breach was email-and-password only, a freeze may be extra — still reasonable if you are tired of guessing. If SSN and DOB were listed, freeze is the adult move.

From the record

A dump is past tense. A freeze is present tense. A suite of unused tiles is a subscription.

GUIDEORA rule for breach week

Forty-eight hours, not forty-eight products

Hour 1: email password and 2FA. Hour 2: any login that shared that password. Day 1: banks. Day 2: bureau freeze if identifiers were in scope, IRS IP PIN if tax data was. Then stop shopping.

A breach notification on a phone at night
The company already lost it. Your next two days are still yours.

No

  • Have I Been Pwned is a lookup, not a restoration service.
  • The company's 'free year' of monitoring is optional.
  • Do not pay credit repair because a retailer lost a list.
  • A VPN installed on Thursday does not recall Tuesday's dump.

Aura as a household camera you might add

Aura currently bundles monitoring, some lock-style credit tools, and extras. If you want one dashboard after a messy week, that is the example this site already uses. It is not required to freeze, and it does not un-breach the company.

Free credit freezes do not require Aura. Do those first.

Pros

  • +A short list beats a cart of tiles
  • +Freezes remain free
  • +A household bundle can be a later convenience

Cons

  • −Panic shopping is profitable for someone
  • −Free monitoring years expire
  • −SSNs do not rotate

Do the boring list. Then stop.

Passwords, freeze if identifiers leaked, then maybe one camera. Aura is that camera example. GUIDEORA does not un-dump a company.

Editor take

Two days, not two dozen SKUs

Breaches are past tense. Freeze if SSN was in scope. Aura is optional watching. IdentityTheft.gov if accounts appear.
