Aura's Experian Credit Lock vs a Real Credit Freeze — What Each One Actually Does

Quick take

Aura's instant Credit Lock, as Aura currently describes it, applies to an Experian file. A security freeze is something you place at each nationwide bureau. Use the lock for speed inside Aura. Use the freeze if you want the strongest friction on new credit across all three files. Neither tool is credit repair, and neither raises a score.

Two tools that ads like to merge

After the 2017 Equifax breach, roughly 147 million people learned that a Social Security number, once leaked, stays leaked. The FTC's boring advice was freeze, watch your own reports, and assume identifiers will be replayed. Monitoring companies then sold dashboards with lock buttons. A lock and a freeze are not synonyms. If you only remember one sentence from this page, remember that.

Aura currently monitors inquiries at Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian, and it currently offers instant Experian Credit Lock. Monitoring tells you something happened. A lock or freeze tries to make a new account harder to open. Those are sequential jobs, not the same job.

What Aura's Experian Credit Lock is

As Aura documents it, Credit Lock lets you lock an Experian credit file from the product so new credit is harder to open through that bureau until you unlock. It is designed to be fast. Fast is the point. It is still Experian's lock product sitting inside Aura's app — not a federal freeze statute, and not a switch that hits TransUnion and Equifax at the same time.

What a security freeze actually is

A security freeze, under U.S. rules that made freezes free, restricts access to your credit file at that bureau until you lift it. You place it with Equifax, with Experian, and with TransUnion — three requests, three PINs or passwords, three lift steps when you want a loan. It does not freeze your existing cards. It does not stop someone who already has an account number. It does not hide you from people-search sites.

A fraud alert is weaker and shorter: it asks lenders to take extra steps. It is not a freeze. Aura's monitoring is not a freeze either. GUIDEORA will not tell you a dashboard 'freezes your identity.' That sentence is how people skip the bureau websites.

Jobs that get confused on identity homepages.

Child credit freezes — paperwork Aura can help with

Minors often have thin or missing files until a thief creates one. Aura's Family plan currently advertises help submitting a child's freeze request across Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. That is useful because the paper path is annoying. The freeze still has to be accepted by the bureaus. Aura is not the bureau.

A sane stack: freeze plus Aura, not freeze or Aura

If new-account fraud is the fear, place the three freezes. If you want someone to nag you when an inquiry still appears, or when a dump matches your SSN, Aura can be the nag. If you want a one-tap Experian lock for a week you are traveling, that is what the lock is for. Stacking is rational. Substituting the lock for the freeze is how you leave two files open.

What to do this afternoon

Open the three bureau freeze pages and decide if you will live with lift friction. Then decide if Aura's dashboard is worth a bill for alerts and restoration. Do not let a single gold padlock in a screenshot stand in for Equifax and TransUnion.

Editor take

Use the lock. Still place the freeze if you mean it.

Aura's Experian lock is a fast household control. A three-bureau freeze is still the durable public-advice tool after Equifax. Do both if new-account fraud is the fear. Do not assume one Aura toggle closed Equifax and TransUnion.
