How to Spot a Fake Vacation Rental Before You Wire Anything

Quick take

Rental fraud is usually stolen photography plus a rush to move money off any record. A live video walkthrough of the actual unit kills most of it. Reverse marketplaces can add identity and 'proof of funds' signals, but if they never hold the rent they cannot be your fraud department. Plan B Rentals currently tells travelers to demand a video tour, keep terms in their messages, and use escrow on larger stays. Do those things even if a badge looks official. GUIDEORA is not a scam-recovery service.

Why fake villas still convert

The photos are real. They are just someone else's. The price is a little too kind. The host cannot do a walkthrough because they are 'traveling' but can take a deposit today. You want the trip to work. Fraud is not clever. It is impatient, and it needs you to be impatient too.

Catalog platforms still get scams. They also have payment holds and abuse teams. Direct-pay matching has better specificity and worse default protection. Treat that as a design fact, not as an insult to any one brand.

From the record

A person who cannot show you the rooms on a live camera does not get a deposit. That rule is older than every app logo.

A verification order that does not care about the logo

Do it in this order even when you are excited. Reverse-image search the best photos. Live video through every room, including the view from a window that matches the map pin. Ask them to show a utility bill or registration document with the address — redacted as needed — or to meet you in a way that proves they can access the building. If the stay is in a city with short-term rental licensing, ask for the registration number and look it up.

  • Refuse to move to WhatsApp / Telegram / SMS until the stay terms exist in the platform thread.
  • Never pay a 'holding fee' to a different name than the person on the video.
  • If the price is half of every comparable stay, assume the photo is the product.
  • Take timestamped arrival video even after you verified — damage disputes are a second scam genre.

Money tells that should stop the deal

Friends-and-family. Gift cards. Crypto 'because it's faster.' A request to pay a third cousin. A full month up front for a host you have never seen walk the hallway. Those are not 'flexible rails.' They are how the JPEG cashes out. A legitimate host who wants a direct deal can still use escrow or a goods-and-services payment and will not melt down when you ask.

What Plan B Rentals can and cannot do here

Plan B currently verifies Dreamers with a real card via Stripe for the subscription, shows hosts billing region and IP-ish location signals, and offers optional Proof of Funds (they currently say they extract a balance-style figure and do not store the document). Hosts see match scores and can ignore low fits. That is anti-tire-kicker design. It is not a title company and not a police report.

Their own FAQ currently tells travelers to always ask for a video walkthrough, keep key terms in PBR messaging, consider escrow on deposits, and check whether short-term rentals are legal at the destination. Those are the right sentences. They exist because Plan B does not process the stay. Use their contract checklists. Then still do the camera test. Their 'Instant-Ready' or funds badges are vendor signals, not GUIDEORA certificates.

Signals vs proof — do not confuse the two.

Pros

  • +On-platform messages give you a timestamped term sheet
  • +Vendor ID and funds signals can filter some tire-kickers
  • +Plan B currently publishes the video-and-escrow playbook in their own FAQ

Cons

  • −No payment hold means you are the fraud desk
  • −Stolen photos still exist in every channel
  • −A high match score can make people skip the walkthrough — do not

When to abort even if you like the host

Abort when the camera never happens, when money is supposed to leave the thread first, or when the registration number does not exist in a licensed city. Keep going when the building is real and the hold matches the number. Plan B Rentals is the request-feed example this site uses. Their safety copy is useful; their badge is not a deed. GUIDEORA does not verify listings.

Editor take

Verify the building. Then talk about money.

A badge is not a title search. Do the walkthrough, match the person to the property, then use a hold that fits the number. Plan B Rentals is the matching example this site uses — they currently push video, written terms, and optional escrow because they do not process the stay. Confirm their live safety pages. GUIDEORA will not recover a wire.
