Hard vs Soft Credit Inquiries: Which Ones You Actually Invited

Quick take
Hard inquiries usually follow a credit application you started. Soft inquiries often include your own checks and some pre-screens; they typically do not work like a hard pull on popular scoring models. No app can promise a score change. Experian is the bureau-access example this site uses. GUIDEORA is not a CRA and does not furnish scores to lenders.
The highlight is not a verdict
Monitoring apps love a red inquiry. Sometimes it is the auto loan you wanted. Sometimes it is you logging into a free score site. Hard vs soft is about who initiated a lender-style check, not about how scary the badge is.
We will not tell you a pull 'costs 12 points.' Scoring formulas differ by lender. Educational scores in an app are often not the FICO a bank uses. That is a separate GUIDEORA piece.
From the record
An inquiry is a footprint. A freeze is a locked door. Do not confuse the diary with the lock.
GUIDEORA rule for credit inquiries
What to do with a surprise hard pull
If you did not apply, treat it as a possible new-account issue: freeze files at the bureaus, check IdentityTheft.gov if money moved, dispute inaccuracies through official bureau processes. A monitoring alert is a clue. It is not a police report.

Freeze
A different tool
- Match hard pulls to applications you remember.
- Do not pay a 'repair' shop to remove accurate inquiries.
- Rate-shop in a tight window if you are actually borrowing — models often group those.
- A freeze is for new credit you did not want, not for hiding a pull you authorized.
Experian as a file you can actually read
Experian currently lets many consumers view file activity and offers paid identity extras. It is still one bureau. Equifax and TransUnion are separate. We mention Experian because it is a direct-file product this site already covers — not because a score widget will rise.
Confirm whether you are looking at an educational score or a FICO type. The label in the app matters more than the big number.
Pros
- +Naming hard vs soft stops panic-clicking
- +A bureau file is where the footprint actually lives
- +Experian is a real file, not a random widget
Cons
- −Apps still paint soft checks in alarming colors
- −One bureau is not three
- −No article can lawfully promise a higher score
Invite, then inspect
Hard pulls you invited are the cost of applying. Surprise hard pulls are a freeze-and-check problem. Experian is the file example this site uses. GUIDEORA will not move your number.

Read the invitation
Treat hard pulls as applications and soft pulls as mostly looking. Experian is the bureau example here. Confirm live score type. No promises.
