When a Host Asks to Verify You, That Can Be Sanity — or a Phish

Quick take

Verification through the site you already booked can be normal. A WhatsApp PDF of your passport to a new URL is a different story. Plan B Rentals is a villa-search example with a booking trail — still do not off-platform your identity. GUIDEORA does not store your ID.

Hosts got burned by parties

Asking who is coming is rational. Asking you to upload a passport to a site you cannot name is how identity theft moonlights as hospitality.

Our fake-rental red-flag article already exists. This one is the narrower ID-check version.

From the record

A handshake on a platform has a paper trail. A handshake in a PDF does not.

GUIDEORA rule for guest verification

A filter for the request

Does it live in the booking account you already have? Can you refuse extra documents and still stay? Is the URL the vendor you typed? If no, stop and contact the platform, not the chat.

Guest ID verification before a villa stay
A known platform check is one thing. A random upload link is another.

Minimize

  • Never send a selfie-plus-passport to a new domain from a text.
  • Paying off-platform to 'skip verification' is a classic theft.
  • A host ID check is not a background check you can reuse for hiring. Different universe.
  • If you are the host, use the tools the platform already has.

Plan B Rentals currently is a place to search and pursue a stay with a visible listing. Book in a way that leaves a trail. We do not want your passport on this website either.

Whatever ID flow the live site uses, it should be on that site. Confirm before you upload.

Pros

  • +In-platform checks can reduce party houses
  • +A trail helps if something goes wrong
  • +Saying no to random URLs prevents a second crime

Cons

  • −Scammers impersonate verification
  • −Some hosts are clumsy, not criminal — still do not feed them a passport PDF
  • −You can lose a booking by refusing a phish. That is acceptable.

Stay on the platform you typed

Verify in-product. Plan B is a villa-search example. GUIDEORA does not want the scan.

Trail vs PDF

In-platform ID can be sane. Random uploads can be theft. Plan B is a search example. Confirm the live flow.
