Passwordless Does Not Mean Phish-Proof

Quick take

Passwordless removes the typed secret from some flows. Lookalike sites can still ask you to approve a prompt, a magic link, or an 'allow' on your phone. Check the URL. 1Password Watchtower is the nag example this site uses. Passkeys help when the site origin is bound. Confirm live.

They stopped asking you to type. They started asking you to tap.

Magic links in email. Push yes on a phone. Passkey dialogs. The secret moved. The liar can still ask for a tap.

Passkeys bound to a real origin are stronger against classic fake boxes. A rushed tap on a lookalike still ruins your week.

From the record

Passwordless means fewer typed secrets. It does not mean fewer liars.

GUIDEORA rule for passwordless

Old hygiene still applies

Bookmark the bank. Do not use the first search ad. Watchtower-style alerts for reused and breached leftovers still matter because not every site went passwordless.

Still correct

  • Never approve a prompt you did not start.
  • Magic-link email can be a stolen-inbox problem — protect email first.
  • A vault fill that only runs on the real domain is a feature. Use it.
  • Hardware keys still want you to look at the device.

1Password Watchtower

1Password currently nags reused, breached, and weak items, and is investing in passkeys as they document it. That leftover-password hygiene is why it is in a passwordless article. Bitwarden has analogous reports. Confirm live.

A Watchtower green check is not a certificate that every site is passkey-only.

Pros

  • +Fewer typed secrets on real sites
  • +Origin-bound passkeys raise the bar
  • +Vault nags still clean the leftovers

Cons

  • −Approve-prompts are the new box
  • −Email magic links need a safe inbox
  • −People tap yes when rushed

Look before you tap

Passwordless shrinks typing, not lying. 1Password is the nag-and-passkey example. GUIDEORA is not the prompt.
