Paying a Host Directly: Escrow, Deposits, and What the Platform Won't Hold

Quick take

On a typical OTA, the platform is in the money path. That is annoying at checkout and useful when a stay goes wrong. A matching site that never processes the rent cannot freeze, refund, or chargeback the villa for you. Plan B Rentals currently says it is escrow-friendly and introduction-only: you and the host pick cash, transfer, card, crypto, or a third-party escrow. Use that flexibility with a written agreement. GUIDEORA is not an escrow and not a bank.

What a catalog platform is actually selling you

When you pay Airbnb, Booking.com, or VRBO, you are not only paying for a search box. You are paying a money path: the host does not always receive the full stay on the day you click. That lag, plus their support tools, is why guest fees exist. It is also why 'the app refunded me' is a sentence that can exist.

People hate the fee and forget the hold. Then they move the stay off-platform to 'save the cut' and discover there is no button when the listing was a lie. Off-platform is not automatically a scam. It is a different product with different failure modes.

From the record

A marketplace that never sees the rent cannot be your refund department. Price that job before you celebrate zero commission.

GUIDEORA rule for direct-pay stays

Hold

OTA value when things break

Flexible — and unprotected

Escrow

A third party with rules

Direct pay is not one method

Bank transfer, Wise, a card on a personal Square link, cash on arrival, crypto — those are not equivalent. Cash on arrival can be rational for a tiny stay with a video walkthrough. A full month wired to a personal account because someone emailed from a Gmail address is how rental fraud headlines get written. The method should match the size of the number and how well you have verified the property.

Keep the negotiation on the platform's messages until terms exist in writing. That timestamped thread is often the only evidence you will have. Then, if you both agree, move to a payment rail. Do not let urgency skip the paper.

The hold belongs in a sentence both people signed — not in a vibe.

Not a strategy

Escrow and deposits are different jobs

Rent escrow holds the stay money until a condition you both named — often check-in confirmed. A security deposit is supposed to cover damage, not the host's cash flow. Mixing them into one giant wire is how travelers lose leverage and how hosts get accused of theft when a stay ends badly. Name two piles. Name who releases each pile. Take arrival photos before you unpack.

  • Agree price, dates, cancellation, and deposit rules in writing first.
  • For larger stays, use a recognized escrow or goods-and-services payment — not 'friends and family.'
  • Do not send a deposit to a different name than the person you video-called.
  • A chargeback is a last resort, not a plan, and it fails on many wires and crypto sends.

How Plan B Rentals currently talks about money

Plan B currently repeats one line in several places: they do not process the booking payment, set the stay price, or control the final deal. Subscriptions go through Stripe (they also mention crypto for platform fees). Stay money is between dreamer and host. Their escrow page currently points at third parties such as Escrow.com and similar services with no affiliate relationship, as they write it. That is a brochure of options, not a GUIDEORA endorsement of any escrow brand.

They currently recommend milestone payments on stays of about two weeks or longer, on-platform messages until terms are set, and contract templates in their help area. Use those as checklists. They are not a substitute for local contract law. Their DAC7 / 'introduction-only' privacy story is their compliance design — it does not make your income invisible to a tax authority.

Pros

  • +You can choose a hold that matches the size of the stay
  • +Deposits can sit in escrow instead of a host's checking account
  • +Plan B currently documents the 'we never touch the rent' model in plain language

Cons

  • −There is no one-click OTA refund if you skip a hold
  • −Bad rails (friends-and-family, unexplained crypto) are still available if you insist
  • −Writing the agreement is work the catalog used to hide inside a button

When to stay inside the OTA on purpose

Stay inside the catalog when you want their hold more than you want to negotiate rails. Use a reverse marketplace when you will write release conditions and verify the house. Plan B Rentals is the introduction-only example this site uses. Read their live escrow and payments pages before you subscribe. GUIDEORA will not move your money.

Editor take

If nobody holds the rent, you write the hold

Stay on an OTA when you want their payment machine. Use a reverse marketplace when you will run escrow or milestones yourself. Plan B Rentals currently lists Escrow.com-style options as information, not as their checkout. Confirm their live payment FAQ. GUIDEORA will not hold your deposit.
