The Wi-Fi Password You Put on the Fridge Is Not a Vault

Quick take

A guest network password on the fridge is fine. Reusing that string as email, streaming, and the vault master is how one photographer at a party becomes a stuffing event. Bitwarden is the vault example this site uses. Rotate the guest key when you would change the door code.

Hospitality is allowed to be visible

Guests need the SSID. A QR code or a sticky note is normal. The failure is using the same string as six accounts.

WPA keys are also in every phone that joined. When a roommate leaves, rotate. Same as a lock change.

From the record

Visible guest Wi-Fi is hospitality. Visible email passwords are a dump.

GUIDEORA rule for fridge secrets

Make two networks if you can

Guest SSID isolated from printers and NAS if the router allows it. Kids' IoT on a third VLAN if you are that person. Most families just need: guest string ≠ vault string.

Hospitality is a sticky note. The inbox is not.

Not the fridge

Rotate

Like a door code

  • Unique streaming password, even if the fridge has Wi-Fi.
  • Do not photograph the router admin sticker into chat.
  • A vault share can hold the real Wi-Fi for adults.
  • Rotate after a party if you hosted strangers.

Bitwarden for everything that is not hospitality

Bitwarden currently stores the non-fridge secrets for free for one user as they list it. Put email and banks there. Leave the guest SSID on the door if you want. Confirm live.

A password manager is not a router. It will not isolate IoT for you.

Pros

  • +Guest Wi-Fi can stay human
  • +Unique vault secrets stop the stuffing blast radius
  • +Rotation is a door-code habit

Cons

  • −People reuse anyway
  • −Old phones keep the old key
  • −Router stickers are a second fridge

Fridge for guests. Vault for you.

Hospitality can be visible. Accounts cannot. Bitwarden is the vault example. GUIDEORA does not print stickies.

Editor take

Two kinds of secrets

Guest Wi-Fi may live on the fridge. Email may not. Bitwarden is the house for the rest. Confirm live. Rotate like a lock.
