When Someone Files a Tax Return in Your Name

Quick take
If e-file rejects because a return already exists, that is a possible tax-related identity theft. Use IRS processes (including Identity Protection PIN where offered) — not a VPN. Identity Guard is the monitoring-and-restoration example this site uses. It does not file your 14039 for you. We are not the IRS.
The government already has a form
Tax-related identity theft is when someone files using your SSN to grab a refund. You find out when your filing bounces or a letter arrives. This is not a dark-web hobby dashboard problem first.
Follow current IRS instructions. IdentityTheft.gov is the U.S. consumer hub that points at tax steps too. We will not paste a stale form number as if it never changes.
From the record
Do not pay a 'tax hero' in the search ads. The IRS does not need their logo.

Then freeze and watch credit
A stolen SSN is also a new-credit problem. Freeze the three bureaus. Watch for accounts. That is parallel, not a substitute for the IRS door.

App
Not the IRS
- Use official IRS and FTC pages, not the first ad.
- Keep copies of everything you send.
- An IP PIN is worth the setup if you qualify.
- Monitoring cannot intercept a fraudulent e-file.
Restoration-shaped bundles
Identity Guard currently sells monitoring plus restoration specialists on higher plans as they describe them. That can help with the credit-file side and phone-tree fatigue. It is not the IRS. We mention it as this site's restoration-shaped example next to Aura elsewhere.
Confirm live restoration terms. Insurance-style add-ons are policies with caps. Read them.
Pros
- +Official processes exist and beat a dashboard
- +Credit freeze is the parallel new-account tool
- +Staffed restoration can help the bureau side
Cons
- −Search ads will impersonate the IRS
- −Monitoring will not see the fraudulent 1040 in time
- −Refund recovery is slow even when you do it right
Government door, then freeze
File the identity-theft tax steps with the IRS. Freeze credit. Identity Guard is the restoration-shaped example this site uses for the bureau mess. GUIDEORA is not the IRS.
Editor take
IRS first
A rejected return is a government process. Identity Guard is the monitoring example for the credit side. Confirm live. Not tax advice.
