Host Cancellation vs Travel Insurance: Two Different Disappointments

Quick take

OTA host-cancel rules live on the platform. Direct deals live in the clause you wrote. Travel insurance is a separate contract with exclusions. Plan B Rentals currently recommends agreeing cancel terms in writing because they do not process the stay. We do not sell insurance.

Do not file the storm with the host desk

Host cancel: they pulled the stay. Insurance: a named peril in a contract. Mixing them is how both desks say no.

On Airbnb-class platforms, host cancel has a playbook. On Plan B-class matches, the playbook is the thread you wrote before anyone paid.

From the record

If it is not in the clause, it is a favor. Favors are not a plan.

GUIDEORA rule for stay disappointments

Write the host-cancel line first

What they owe if they cancel 14 / 7 / 1 days out. What you owe if you cancel. Mid-stay. Then pay. Then optionally buy insurance for storms and you-getting-sick — read exclusions.

Your paper

  • Insurance will not like a stay you wired to a personal account with no contract.
  • Platform guarantees do not follow you off-platform.
  • A video tour does not replace a cancel clause.
  • We are not an insurer and not a lawyer.

Plan B's paper-first model

Plan B currently provides message history and contract templates as they describe them, and does not hold rent. That makes the written cancel line the product. Confirm live help. Escrow is a different article on this site.

Their platform subscription refund policy is separate from stay money. Do not confuse the two piles.

Pros

  • +Two desks stay two desks
  • +Written host-cancel terms are free if you insist
  • +Insurance can cover different perils

Cons

  • −People buy insurance and skip the clause
  • −Direct deals have no OTA button
  • −Exclusions are the real policy

Clause, then optional policy

Write host cancel first. Consider insurance second. Plan B is the direct-deal example. GUIDEORA does not pay claims.

Editor take

Two disappointments, two contracts

Host cancel is your clause or the OTA. Insurance is a policy. Plan B Rentals needs the clause in writing. Confirm live. Not insurance advice.
