Proton Unlimited Review: Drive Storage Plus Mail, VPN, and Pass in One Bill

Quick take
Proton Unlimited is a privacy suite with 500 GB of Drive attached, not a cheap disk. It makes sense if you will actually use Mail or VPN or Pass alongside storage. If you only need 200 GB of files, Drive Plus is the cleaner SKU. Duo and Family exist when you need seats. Confirm every GB and seat on checkout.
Why Proton sells Drive inside a bundle
Most people do not wake up wanting 500 GB of encrypted cloud. They want email that is not an ad network, a VPN for hotel Wi-Fi, a password vault, and a place for tax PDFs. Proton's Unlimited SKU is that bundle. Drive is the closet. If you only needed the closet, paying for the whole house is how vendors extract a larger bill — sometimes fairly, if you would have bought the rooms anyway.
GUIDEORA's rule for bundles is the same as for antivirus suites: count the tiles you will open. A VPN you already pay for elsewhere, a Mail account you will never migrate, and a Pass vault you will not import are not discounts. They are unused line items.
From the record
A bundle is a good deal only if it replaces two or three bills you were going to pay. Otherwise it is a more expensive Drive Plus.

What Unlimited currently packages
On Proton's Drive marketing page, Unlimited is listed with 500 GB of Drive, Proton VPN, Mail, Calendar, and Pass. Proton also advertises a 30-day money-back window on paid Drive SKUs. That window is Proton's term, not a GUIDEORA promise. Use it if the desktop app or photo backup does not fit how you work.

Drive's job inside the suite
Inside Unlimited, Drive is the same encrypted product: client-side encryption as Proton documents it, sharing with optional passwords and expiry, Photos backup, Docs and Sheets, desktop sync. You get more gigabytes than Drive Plus. You do not get a different encryption model. The upgrade is quota and the other apps, not a new kind of privacy.
Photo libraries are how people blow past 200 GB. If the phone backup is the reason you are here, do the math on a year of camera-roll size before you pick Plus vs Unlimited vs Duo. A 4K video habit is not a 200 GB habit.
When the bundle math works
Rough editorial test, not a quote: if you would have paid for Proton VPN and a private Drive and you are willing to move mail or a vault, Unlimited is the SKU to price against those three bills. If you only need 200 GB of PDFs and photos, Drive Plus is usually the honest cart. If two people share a life and a camera roll, Duo's listed 2 TB and two seats are the comparison — confirm seats, GB, and renewal.
SKU chooser for this review only. Checkout wins.
| If this is you | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Testing E2E cloud | Free 5 GB | No card required for a first folder |
| ~200 GB of private files | Drive Plus | Storage without paying for unused apps |
| Files + VPN + Mail you will migrate | Unlimited | One bill if you open those apps |
| Two people, lots of photos | Duo (confirm GB) | Seats and terabytes, not a solo SKU |
Duo and Family — seats, not slogans
Proton lists Duo on the Drive page as a two-user, 2 TB, VPN-included bundle with extra account protection. Family is the larger household SKU Proton sells elsewhere (commonly described as more storage and more seats — confirm the live page). Admin controls matter if you are actually sharing a plan with relatives. They do not matter if you are one person buying Family because the GB number looked nice.
Pros
- +One privacy vendor for mail, VPN, vault, and Drive
- +500 GB listed on Unlimited is a real step up from 200 GB Plus
- +Refund window on paid plans as Proton currently advertises
Cons
- −Easy to overbuy if you only needed Drive Plus
- −Migrating Mail or a password vault is work, not a toggle
- −Two VPNs from two vendors is usually waste, not hardening
Who should pay for the house
Buy Unlimited when Drive is not the only room you will live in. Buy Drive Plus when it is. Buy Duo when two people and a photo library are the actual constraint. Confirm GB, seats, and the renewal line.
Editor take
Buy the suite only if you will use the suite
Unlimited is GUIDEORA's pick when Drive is one room in a Proton house you already wanted. Drive Plus is the pick when you only needed a private folder.
