Quick take

Among these three, Proton Drive wins on default zero-access encryption. Dropbox wins on mature cross-platform sync and sharing habits. iCloud wins if you already live on Apple and you understand ADP (where offered). This is not a ranking of Google Drive or every cloud on earth.

Why this list is three names, not a store aisle

Dropbox taught folder sync. iCloud is how iPhones backup. Proton Drive is the privacy-company cloud. Comparing them is useful because they are the three answers people actually shout in a thread. Comparing them is not a GUIDEORA-wide leaderboard. Google Drive has its own pairing article on this site.

Proton vs Dropbox vs iCloud — this guide only

Scores reflect these three. Other clouds are not ranked on this page.

  1. 1

    Proton Drive

    4.7

Wins this trio when default client-side encryption and a Swiss privacy company are the constraint.

    Zero-access default

  2. 2

    Dropbox

    4.5

Wins this trio when reliable sync, sharing, and years of muscle memory across Windows/Mac/mobile matter more than E2E-by-default.

    Cross-platform sync habits

  3. 3

    iCloud Drive

    4.4

Wins this trio for Apple-only households — especially if Advanced Data Protection is on and available in your country.

    Apple ecosystem

Proton Drive in this trio

Default E2E, 5 GB free, 200 GB Plus, bundles for more GB, Docs/Sheets, Photos, desktop sync. Weaker than Dropbox at 'everyone at work already has an account.' Stronger than default iCloud at 'the vendor should not hold keys' unless ADP is on.

Dropbox in this trio

Dropbox is the professional sync habit: selective sync, sharing, previews, and a free 2 GB that is smaller than Proton's 5 GB but attached to a product people already understand. Standard Dropbox is not a zero-access consumer drive. You are trusting Dropbox with readable files in the usual configuration. That is a valid choice for many teams. It is a different product.

iCloud Drive in this trio

iCloud is glue: photos, device backup, Desktop & Documents. Free 5 GB fills immediately. Paid iCloud+ is cheap for Apple families. Advanced Data Protection brings E2E to many iCloud categories including Drive, with recovery-key consequences. Apple disabled ADP for UK iCloud accounts. If you cannot or will not turn it on, iCloud's privacy story is the standard Apple account story — not Proton's.

How to choose among these three

Apple household with ADP on: iCloud can be enough. Cross-platform sync as a job: Dropbox. Host should not read the folder: Proton Drive.

Editor take

Match the ecosystem you already have

Apple household that will enable ADP: iCloud is in the race. Cross-platform teams that live in shared folders: Dropbox. Host-should-not-read-files: Proton Drive. Stars are for this trio only.
