If Ransomware Hits the Sync Folder, the Cloud Will Help It Travel

Quick take

Sync clients upload what the disk becomes — including ransom notes. Versioning and a pause button matter more than a storage brand. Proton Drive currently offers encrypted cloud with version-style recovery depending on plan. Confirm live. GUIDEORA does not decrypt a lockscreen.

The client is not a security product

It is a copier. If the copier is on, the cloud gets the new, worse files. That is not Proton's unique sin. It is how Dropbox-shaped tools work.

People think 'it's in the cloud' means yesterday is safe. Yesterday is safe only if versions exist and you did not overwrite the retention window.

From the record

Pause is a security control. The photos screensaver is not.

GUIDEORA rule for sync ransomware

What to actually practice

Know where Pause lives. Know how many days of versions you paid for. Keep one backup that is not the same vendor's sync. Do not pay the popup.

Versions

The real backup

Not versions

  • A second cloud is not a backup if both sync from the same infected PC.
  • External disk that is usually unplugged is still underrated.
  • Zero-knowledge does not mean infinite versions. Read the quota.
  • Work files on a personal sync is a second article on this site.

Proton Drive as encrypted storage with a history story

Proton Drive currently encrypts so Proton cannot casually read the files. That does not stop your infected PC from uploading ciphertext of ransom. Use version history and pause. Confirm the live retention numbers.

Desktop sync availability and version limits are plan facts. The help page wins.

Pros

  • +Pause plus versions is a real recovery path
  • +E2EE still helps against a curious host
  • +Proton currently documents Drive as a privacy-shaped cloud

Cons

  • −Sync will still copy a disaster
  • −Retention windows end
  • −E2EE will not un-ransom a live folder

Pause first. Then versions.

Treat sync as a copier. Proton Drive is the encrypted example. GUIDEORA does not un-encrypt a lockscreen.

Editor take

The copier is loyal

Ransomware rides sync. Pause and versions matter. Proton Drive is the example. Confirm live retention.
