The Score in Your App Is Often Not the Lender's Score

Quick take

Consumer apps often show educational scores (commonly VantageScore-style). Lenders may use a FICO version you cannot see in that app. Neither number is a GUIDEORA promise. Experian paid products may show FICO types — confirm the label. We are not a CRA.

The number is branded

FICO is a company. VantageScore is a product from the bureaus' joint venture. Versions exist. Auto and mortgage industry scores exist. Your free app is usually not the auto desk.

A 40-point gap can be a version gap, a file lag, or a different bureau. It is not automatically identity theft. Check the file for real new accounts before you panic.

From the record

Argue about the label under the number. The number without a label is entertainment.

GUIDEORA rule for score widgets

What to do with a gap

Pull the underlying file. Look for inquiries and new accounts you did not open. Freeze if you need friction on new credit. Do not buy a repair plan because two widgets disagreed.

Promise

None

  • Match the bureau: Experian vs Equifax vs TransUnion.
  • Match the model name if the app shows it.
  • Educational scores can still be useful trendlines — trends, not contracts.
  • A lender's preapproval number is still not a GUIDEORA guarantee.

Experian when you want a named FICO

Experian's consumer products currently include FICO tracking on some paid plans — confirm which FICO type they show this year. That is still not every lender's version. Credit Sesame-style apps are often educational Vantage. Different jobs.

Checkout and the on-screen score name win. We will not say 'this is the bank's number.'

Pros

  • +Naming the product stops fake identity crises
  • +A bureau app can show a labeled FICO on some plans
  • +File review still beats widget fighting

Cons

  • −Labels are easy to ignore next to a big font
  • −Industry FICOs still hide from consumers
  • −Two honest scores can still disagree

Collect labels, not arguments

Read the model name. Then read the file. Experian is the bureau example when you want a labeled product. GUIDEORA will not pick your lender's version.

Editor take

Label the number

App scores and lender scores are often different products. Experian is one place to see a named FICO on paid plans as they currently offer. Confirm the type. No promises.
