Why Families Should Not Keep the Only Photo Copy in One Cloud

Quick take

iCloud and Google Photos are excellent default cameras-rolls. They are also one login, one bill, one recovery. Keep a second export — encrypted cloud or a disk. Proton Drive is the private second-place example this site uses. Confirm Photos features on live Proton docs.

The decade lives behind one password

A death, a divorce, a locked Apple ID, a missed credit card. The photos are fine on a server you cannot enter. That is a family-ops problem, not a pixel problem.

Two places does not mean two messy camera rolls forever. It means a periodic export.

From the record

The default cloud is a convenience. The second copy is respect for the decade.

GUIDEORA rule for family photos

A boring cadence

Once a year, export. Put it on Proton-style E2E or an encrypted disk. Write who knows the recovery kit. That person is part of the backup.

Still valid

  • Do not keep the only copy in a dead person's phone.
  • Shared albums are not a second vendor.
  • HEIC vs JPEG is a restore detail — test one year.
  • A vault holds the cloud password. The photos need their own copy.

Proton Drive as the second place

Proton Drive currently includes a Photos-oriented story in its product as they document it, with E2E as the trust model. That is the second-place example next to iCloud/Google as the daily roll. Confirm live Photos behavior and storage.

5 GB free will not hold a decade. Plan size is part of the ritual.

Pros

  • +A second place survives a locked Apple ID
  • +E2E second place is a different trust model
  • +A yearly export is a small ritual

Cons

  • −People will skip the year
  • −Two rolls can confuse which is truth
  • −Recovery kits still need a human

Convenience plus a spare

Keep the default roll. Export a spare. Proton Drive is the private spare this site uses. GUIDEORA cannot unlock iCloud for you.

Editor take

One roll, one spare

Do not leave a decade in one login. Proton Drive is the E2E second-place example. Confirm storage. Write down who can recover.
