The Share Link You Forgot to Expire

Quick take

Anyone with a forever link can keep a copy or reshare the URL. Set expiry, a password, and prefer named people over a public link. Proton Drive currently documents password and expiry on share links. Confirm live. A link is not E2E magic by itself.

You meant a loan. You published a key.

The contractor finished. The link still works. Search, Slack logs, and forwarded mail still have it.

Public-link culture trained us to treat URLs as disposable. They are not.

From the record

If you would not leave a house key under the mat for a year, do not leave a tax PDF URL under the mat for a year.

GUIDEORA rule for share links

Three knobs, in order

Named accounts first. Password second. Expiry third. View-only if the product has it. Do not put the password in the same email as the link.

A cloud share link that never expires
If it does not end, it is not a loan. It is a spare key.

Better

  • Audit old shares twice a year.
  • Client-side encrypted shares still fail if the URL plus password sat in one thread.
  • Google-style 'anyone with the link' is convenience. Treat it as public.
  • Version history will not save you if the leak was a copy they already downloaded.

Proton Drive's share story

Proton Drive currently lets you add password and expiry on links as they document it, on top of E2E file encryption. That is why it is the example: the knobs match the job. Confirm the live share UI. It is still a URL.

A free 5 GB plan may be enough to practice one serious share. Checkout wins on paid.

Pros

  • +Expiry turns a key into a loan
  • +E2E plus a password is a real pair
  • +Named shares beat anonymous URLs

Cons

  • −People still paste link and password together
  • −Old Google links linger in other products
  • −Downloaded copies are out of your control

End the loan

Set expiry. Then delete the share. Proton Drive is the knob example this site uses. GUIDEORA does not host your PDF.

Editor take

Loans, not spare keys

Expire and password share links. Proton Drive currently documents both. Confirm live. Named people beat 'anyone with the link.'
